I’ve heard about GDP, but GVA or Gross Value Added was new to me and means the measure of the value of goods and services produced in an area, industry or sector of an economy.
Taking 17 billion pounds as the size of the Dorset economy, as quoted by the Dorset LEP and approximated to from the local authority spreadsheet I accessed, how is that further broken down into sectors?
They certainly won’t have one called the Foodie sector and I also don’t know what that definition is. Let’s see what data is available and then ask that question later.
Andrew Davis said it is important not to fall into confirmation bias, so I am trying to step through slowly and pose open questions that can be worked upon.
Learning How To Study Again
I did a BSc and MSc but I don’t count myself academic by any means seeing as I passed without honours, as in I got less than a third class degree, in Mathematics at Birmingham University but luckily got onto an M.Sc course at Sunderland Polytechnic, as it was known at the time.
This quest is the rekindling of a slice of academia from my past. In business I don’t read enough. When I meet other business owners, they are forever rattling off book titles to me. I just stand there nodding.
I see this quest as also being good for my mental whealth… and I did mean to write it that way. The mental gymnastics I will have to go through will add to my mental health and the knowledge and skills gathered will add to my mental wealth. See what I did here.
Bournemouth University Briefing Document 2017
I found a 2017 briefing document by Bournemouth University that looks back at the 2015 GVA figures. I was spilt between Dorset County Council as one column and then Bournemouth and Poole as the other. I assume that also includes Christchurch.
Well, at least is a first stab.
Sector | % as Dorset |
Agriculture, forestry and fishing | 0.86 |
Production | 1.91 |
Manufacturing | 8.90 |
Construction | 6.78 |
Distribution; transport; accommodation & food | 18.62 |
Information and communication | 3.12 |
Financial and insurance activities | 7.60 |
Real estate activities | 18.07 |
Business service activities | 8.67 |
Public administration; education; health | 20.95 |
Other services and household activities | 4.53 |
I need to look further as that doesn’t feel satisfactory or as new. “Distribution; transport; accommodation & food” seems a strange category to me.
This is the above table extended as finance.
